As part of our March 2 release, 3PL Central is sunsetting the classic mobile application to enhance our system security. As part of this effort, all customers are required to migrate to SmartScan by March 2 to avoid unintended disruptions to your workflows.
This article reviews our recommended steps for migrating from Classic Mobile to SmartScan.
Skip Ahead: Use the following links to skip to the relevant guidelines below.
- Step 1: Test workflows in SmartScan and document what's missing

Guidelines
Step 1: Test workflows in SmartScan and document what's missing
Before you begin the process of purchasing new scanning devices, we need you to verify that you can complete your existing Classic Mobile workflows in SmartScan.
To do this, we're asking you to run through all of your current workflows and document anything that doesn't work so that we can get that list to our Product and Development teams to prioritize as soon as possible. You must submit all missing functionalities by December 1, 2021.
The experience will slightly vary—we discuss some of these variations in detail below—but we're asking you to figure out whether you can accomplish the same end goals in SmartScan.
To get started, log in to SmartScan on a desktop, phone, tablet, or Zebra device running Enterprise Browser using the unique link we sent you via email on October 4, 2021.
- If you cannot find this link and know your GUID (available in the Support Portal), modify this link accordingly: https://secure-wms.com/scannerapp/?tpl={INSERTGUIDHERE}
- If you cannot find this link and cannot access the Support Portal to find your unique GUID, please contact Technical Support for your SmartScan login link.
As you're testing your workflows, please take note of the following variations in experience and reference our Scanning Operations content as needed.
- Receive: This module is now called 'Receipts'.
- There are split menus for receiving against an ASN and managing standard receipts.
- You can now create and confirm receipts directly from SmartScan.
- To open a transaction, you can simply select a receipt from the Receipts grid, which displays all Open and Complete receipts for the selected customer, in addition to scanning a transaction number.
- Put Away: This module is coming soon to SmartScan. If you use this feature in Classic Mobile, please send us your use case details so that we have all the information we need to develop the new Putaway module.
- Move Items: This module is now called 'Move' and offers the ability to move items, movable units, and locations (not just items).
- Print Setup: Print settings are now accessed from the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of the application.
- Initial setup is no longer completed in 3PL Warehouse Manager—everything is set up directly within SmartScan.
- You also now have the ability to connect to a printer via Bluetooth (not just WiFi), and SmartScan automatically searches for and populates nearby printers.
- Logoff: You can now select to 'Logout' from the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of the application.
- In addition to logging out, you can also access 'Current View' settings that let you adjust which track-by's display in the grid when you have a transaction open.
- 'Current View' settings are dependent on the module you're currently in—these are not global settings. For example, what you define as the current view when receiving is configured separately from the current view when packing.
- Pick: This module contains the same functionality as Classic Mobile. There are a few improvements to note:
- You can now prioritize pick jobs and assign pick jobs to specific warehouse users from the Find Orders page in 3PL Warehouse Manager.
- You can also perform multi-order picks and pick directly into bins.
- Custom Pick: This module is no longer available in SmartScan. Everything you could accomplish here in Classic Mobile should be available in SmartScan's standard Pick module. If that's not the case, please send us your use case details as soon as possible.
- Pack: This module offers the same functionality as Classic Mobile, in addition to being able to modify packages when packing picked orders.
- Movable Units: This module is not available in SmartScan.
- You can still move movable units in SmartScan's 'Move' module.
- If you would like to create new or update dimensions of existing movable units, you can do so within 3PL Warehouse Manager under Admin > Movable Units.
- Inventory: This module is now called 'Lookup' and allows you to look up items, locations, and MU labels (not just items).
- Load Out: This functionality was released in SmartScan on February 23, 2022 within the Pick module. One major improvement involves being able to mix pallets and create movable units on the outbound, rather than only being able to ship out movable units that were not broken down when received. For full guidelines, see Picking for Load-Out.
- Serial #s: This module does not exist in SmartScan. Instead, outbound serialization is now captured within the respective modules when packing orders.
Step 2: Submit your findings to Technical Support
If you encounter a workflow that you are unable to accomplish, please document your findings and send them directly to our Technical Support team using your usual method of contact. If possible, please provide a video that displays what you normally do with Classic Mobile so our development team has as much context and understanding of your desired workflow as possible.
If you can complete your current workflows in SmartScan, there is no need to contact Technical Support.
Step 3: Plan for new hardware
When? Regardless of whether you're able to complete your current workflows in SmartScan or not, we recommend looking into your hardware options and purchasing new scanning devices as soon as possible so that you are ready to fully transition to SmartScan before the March 2, 2022 deadline.
What devices? You can view all of our recommended scanning devices in our System Requirements article.
From where? Our recommended hardware provider is BarcodesInc (formerly known as Emkat) because of their familiarity with our product and the hardware support that they offer with their subscriptions.
- You can purchase devices directly from the 3PL Central/Barcodes Partner page at the following link: https://www.barcodesinc.com/partners/3pl-central/.
- Simply enter a quantity next to each desired device, then click Add to Cart after you've made your selections. Select Proceed to Checkout to enter your shipping/billing information and verify your order, then click Place Order Now. The payment method you entered at this time will be charged once the order ships.
- If this is your first time ordering from Emkat or BarcodesInc, someone from their team will reach out to you directly to welcome you as a customer and confirm the order details before preparing the order for shipment.
- If you'd like to speak to someone at Barcodes about understanding which devices would be best for your business, please contact Eric Lindberg directly at elindberg@barcodesinc.com.
You also have the option to purchase new scanning devices from an alternative vendor, but please note that if you experience any hardware issues or software issues that are caused by your specific device, 3PL Central will not be able to offer any level of support in resolving these issues.
Step 4: Start learning and using SmartScan
Once you have a plan in place for purchasing new hardware, we recommend that your warehouse staff begins familiarizing themselves with SmartScan and incorporating them into their daily workflows as soon as possible. If your staff gradually begins learning how to use SmartScan now, it will ensure a smooth transition when Classic Mobile is sunset on March 2, 2022.
We also plan to host an Office Hours session later this year and a 3PL Central University webinar at the beginning of next year that is focused on learning the basics of SmartScan, so please look out for communications announcing this in the near future.
If you have any questions about SmartScan functionality, please reference our Scanning Operations help articles before contacting Technical Support. For all other questions, please contact your Customer Success Manager (CSM) directly.
