Reference fields are custom values you can place on a shipping label that your customer or carrier may require, such as Reference Number, SKU, BOL Number, or Carrier Notes. If you are shipping retail fulfillment and need a PO number to reference a number or replenishment, reference fields are used to communicate that data to ensure the package is shipped to the correct recipient.
This article reviews how to set up reference field values in 3PL Warehouse Manager.
In order to retrieve the reference field data, you must have SmartParcel enabled for your account under Admin > Settings, as well as have your shipping carrier accounts fully configured on the Manage Carrier Accounts page.
- Navigate to Customers > SmartParcel Settings.
- Select a 'Customer' from the drop-down menu. The SmartParcel settings for the chosen customer displays.
- Under 'SmartParcel References', use the drop-down menus to specify the value for each 'Reference #' field as needed. The value indicated in 'Reference' populates in the first reference field on the shipping label, 'Reference 1' in the second field, and so on.
Please note that different carriers have different rules regarding reference fields; e.g., UPS allows for two fields and refers to them as REF1 and REF2, while FedEx allows for three reference fields and refers to each field by the intended value.
- Click Save. The defined fields populate on each shipping label for carriers that support reference fields.
Repeat Steps 2–4 for each customer that requires reference fields on their shipping labels.
